The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) refers to legislation passed by Congress in 1996 that provides the ability for workers to transfer and continue their health insurance coverage whenever they change or lose a job that was providing them with such. It also ensures the protection and confidentiality of a person’s healthcare records and information.
